Basic Function

The individual in this position reports to the Director-Technical Services and performs work in support of the technical services department to include; rail technology; bus technology, commuter rail systems, standards development, research and technology, information technology and other related systems in support of APTA member activities

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Achieve familiarity with transit technology as a part of the APTA technical services team.
  2. Participate in APTA and other industry technical standards development activities to include meeting coordination draft document preparation.
  3. Participate in APTA and other industry technical committees in support of technical committee staff advisors
  4. Participate in the development of industry workshops and conferences related to transit technology
  5. Provide technical information to APTA members and address inquiries from the field.

Measures of Accountability

  1. Demonstrated ability to organize, coordinate and facilitate many on-going tasks, programs and committees at one time.
  2. Extent to which meetings, seminars, conferences, and travel arrangements are scheduled and planned in a timely manner;
  3. Feedback from APTA members working on standards committees;
  4. Availability when needed during normal working hours to perform duties;
  5. Demonstrated ability to function as a member of a team and willingness to support other staff during periods of heavy workload.
  6. Demonstration of a pleasant and responsive attitude to committee leadership and members when responding to inquiries and assignments.
  7. The extent to which other functions and duties are completed as assigned and in a timely manner.

Qualifications

APTA is seeking the services of an entry level engineering professional to serve as a member of the APTA transit technical services team. The APTA Technical Services Department provides engineering support to a variety of transportation technologies including;

  • Electronic payment systems
  • Traction power
  • Railway and transit signaling
  • Vehicle technology
  • Wireless technology
  • Intelligent transportation systems

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in an engineering discipline appropriate to the mission of technical services (mechanical, electrical preferred). Must exhibit the ability to acquire project management skills and possess oral and written communications skills, working effectively work with people and organizations. Familiarity with current computer operating systems is essential. Must be able to work independently and under pressure with multiple deadlines.

The successful candidate will demonstrate interest in a wide range of transit technologies and a willingness to learn the intricacies of this industry. Good communications skills are essential.
