APTA International Bus Roadeo History

The 2004 APTA International Bus Roadeo is its 29th Annual Roadeo. The first APTA Bus Roadeo was held to test the safe driving knowledge and skills of the drivers. It was held October 19, 1976, at the APTA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA. The contestants were APTA members had won their local systems’ Roadeo. The winner was Harry Frochlish of Capital Area Transportation Authority, Lansing, MI. The runner up, by one point, was Paul Owens of Atlanta’s MARTA system. The next year, at the Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA, William H. Moore, Toronto Transit Commission, was the winner. Winners’ names are in the International Bus Roadeo Handbook.

The first APTA-sponsored Bus Maintenance Roadeo was held in Washington, D.C. in 1988 after a successful demonstration at PACE in Chicago in 1987. There were separate maintenance and operator Roadeos from 1988 through 1997. The first combined Roadeo was held in New York in 1998.
