The purposes of our committee are to serve as the focal point for the development
and implementation of technology and to enhance the effectiveness of transit
planning and operations. Our goal is to increase productivity and efficiency
in the transit industry by promoting coordination, development and the use
of information technology.
The agenda for this year is to: 1) define the roles of our IT Committee in
assisting the APTA committee structure relative to technology issues and to
make recommendations for oversight and consolidation; 2) Collect and disseminate
valuable transit IT data through web surveys; 3) study e-commerce/e-procurement
to help identify opportunities, appropriate uses and issues (board rules,
regulations, laws, etc.); and 4) refocus the TransITech workshop toward a
conference for Chief Information Officers (CIO), Chief Technology Officers
(CTO) and computer professionals to discuss and present relative issues, visions,
directions and lessons learned.
The committee has successfully worked with APTA to host TransITech outside
the context of the APTA Annual Conference and expand TransITech to become
our industry's CIO/CTO Conference. Our aim is to provide information technology
managers, industry professionals, and interested individuals a place to meet,
exchange experiences, and discuss how information technology will be shaping
the future of transit. This refocus would work in conjunction with the current
TransITech format, which provides a series of computer and technology workshops
to educate participants and enhance productivity, as well as a place where
transit personnel can witness demonstrations of existing software packages.
Please continue checking APTANet (www.apta.com) for the latest updates.
In summary, our Information Technology Committee wants to be seen as a facilitator
and a force to help transit executives and professionals make the best decisions
concerning information technology, help our industry get the most out of its
technology investments, and facilitate change by exploring new technologies
and identifying the ones that hold the greatest promise for supporting public
transit's goals.
