What is the "Basic Option"?

Basic Option is only available to transit system members with operating expenses less than or equal to $1,000,000. If operating expenses are under $1,000,000, $200 is subtracted from the calculated dues. If operating expenses are less than $500,000, the Basic Option is $300. Canadian Bus Only - dues based on number of licensed buses with a $150 (U.S. $) Basic Option as the minimum floor.

The Basic Option membership includes the following benefits:

  • A listing in and access to the APTA Membership Directory
  • Receiving a copy of the Transportation Fact Book
  • Attending APTA meetings at member registration rates
  • Purchasing APTA publications at member prices
  • Participating in APTA committees
  • Receiving announcements and Government Affairs news

These members will not:

  • Receive all statistical and technical publications
  • Be eligible to serve as elected officers and directors of APTA
DEFINITIONS OF CATEGORIES

CATEGORY A - U.S. and Canadian Transit Systems and U.S Section 5310 and 5311 (01a, 01b, 02a)

Defined as any entities (persons, firms or corporations, trustees or receivers, municipal or other government agencies) operating any form of organized public transit system within the boundaries of the United States or its territories and possessions, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Canada, or Mexico.

Canadian Transit Systems - Bus Only  (02b) Those Canadian transit systems that operate buses only.

CATEGORY B - Transit Management Companies (03a)

Defined as a firm or corporation organized to provide professional management services to transit systems within the same boundaries as a U.S. or Canadian System, provided that Management Company Membership shall not take the place of the transit system membership.

CATEGORY C - Business Members (04a, 04b, 04c)

Manufacturers/Suppliers (04a), Consulting Companies (04b), Contractors (04c)
Defined as any organization which supplies goods/services to the transit industry; provides professional consultation services; or engages in the construction of transit facilities.

APTA also has a special dues category created to assist business owners who are designated as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, Woman-owned Business Enterprise, or Minority Business Enterprise. To qualify, certification paperwork must be submitted with the application and the gross transit sales/billings have to be $250,000 or less.  Returning DBE members are ineligible for the reduced rates and must pay dues according to the regular Business Member schedule.

CATEGORY D - Governmental Agencies (05a, 05b, 05c)

Non-Operating State Departments of Transportation (05a), Metropolitan Planning Organizations (05b), Government Agency Members (05c) (includes agencies of local or regional levels of government responsible for the planning and/or development of public transit systems.)

CATEGORY E - Affiliates (06a - 06m)

The Affiliate Membership is a broad-ranged category which includes: Associated Railroads (06a), D.C. Based Legislative Representatives (06e), High Speed Rail Authorities (06b), International Transit Systems and Authorities (06d), Land Developers (06l), New Transit Enterprises (06c), Public Interest Groups (06j), Publications (06g), Single Professional Consultants (06m), State Associations (06h), Transportation Management Associations (06f), Universities (Research Institutes) (06i), and Vanpool/Carpool Providers (06k).

CATEGORY F - Retirees (07a)

The Retiree category is for those persons retired from transit systems or related businesses who want to continue their contact with the transit industry. Individuals should no longer be involved in or seeking consulting business.
