New Orleans Streetcar Expansion Project

(25 person limit  per tour )

The RTA won a TIGER Grant for an expansion of a major Avenue. This will connect a key downtown corridor to the Union Passenger Terminal, so that passengers can link from the RTA network to Amtrak and Greyhound, creating new intermodality and convenience. A second major expansion project will extend streetcar service to the neighborhoods around the French Quarter, greatly improving mobility and access to jobs for transit-dependent residents. Participants will find this tour to be most interesting because streetcars are the new urban phenomenon in the U.S., with some 140 cities looking into them.

Further, the RTA and its operating partner, Veolia Transportation, are using the latest technology in rail construction, community engagement, and construction management to execute this important and complex project. They are collaborating closely with a host of city agencies (water, sewer, utility, fire, police, etc.) and with the development community. Over $1.1 billion in new development has already been committed along the expansion corridor.

Tour participants will be transported by bus to the United Passenger Terminal, where the walking tour will begin.

  • Wednesday, October 5, from 2 - 4 p.m.
Buses will depart from the Hall E entrance of the Convention Center on Convention Center Blvd. and return to the Convention Center, Hilton Riverside, and Marriott at the times indicated above.
  • Thursday, October 6, from 9 - 11 a.m.
Buses will depart from and return to the Convention Center Blvd. entrance of the Hilton Riverside at the times indicated above.

Historic Carrollton Facility

(60 person limit; 2 tours of 30)

The streetcars of New Orleans are an iconic symbol of the city, and the St. Charles line is the oldest continuously operating street railway system in the world, dating back to 1835. The RTA has an important streetcar facility that is completely unique in the U.S., frankly even in the world. This is the Carrollton facility, where teams of craftspeople construct and maintain the streetcars by hand, using time-honored techniques and tools from the past, which preserve the streetcars’ treasured status as a National Historic Landmark.

The 40 craftspeople who work at this facility are amazingly talented, and the results they produce with tools that are similar to those used over 100 years ago are truly remarkable. The building itself is a beautiful historical facility with a lot of character. These craftspeople re-built the entire collection of red Canal Street streetcars that were extensively damaged in Hurricane Katrina, and put them back into service. They update and maintain the historic green streetcars as well.

The RTA has given this tour to dignitaries from across the world, including senators, members of Congress, and leaders from many countries. Come and see a beautiful historic building and dedicated craftspeople hand-crafting every aspect of the production, maintenance, and repair of the green and red streetcars that are very popular among residents and tourists alike.

Tour participants will be transported by bus to the Carrollton facility, where the walking tour will begin.
