 2014 Sustainability & Public Transportation Workshop

The 2014 Sustainability and Public Transportation Workshop is scheduled for August 3-5, 2014, at the Omni Parker House in Boston, MA.

About This Workshop

Welcome to the Tenth Annual APTA Sustainability and Public Transportation Workshop, hosted by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Agency, with a focus on sustainable development, climate change adaptation and resiliency, Environmental and Sustainability Management Systems (ESMS), and innovations in green design and mobility, as well as integration of new ideas into capital planning, service planning and day-to-day operations.

Cities of all sizes across the nation are partnering with local governments, civic organizations, universities, advocacy groups and the private sector to promote clean technology, integrate transit planning and operations into their development plans, and grow by building transit-oriented communities. As large institutions, such as universities and hospitals, develop sustainability plans and continue to expand, transit connections become increasingly critical.

The workshop explores emerging trends and partnerships that transit agencies are developing to support sustainable development. Participants can expect to:

  • Hear from speakers with a wealth of knowledge in these areas, including APTA Sustainability Commitment signatories with real-world experience;
  • Learn how APTA members are improving efficiency, saving money, mitigating environmental impacts and promoting strategies that encourage public transit use;
  • Learn what models exist for forging innovative partnerships on sustainability; and
  • Experience firsthand how the MBTA is implementing these practices to help ensure a more sustainable future for the Boston area.

Speakers to include:

  • Therese McMillan, administrator, Federal Transit Administration, Washington, DC
  • Richard A. Davey, secretary of transportation, and chief executive officer, Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), Boston, MA
  • Beverly A. Scott, Ph.D., general manager/CEO, MassDOT Rail & Transit Division, Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, Boston, MA
  • Gina McCarthy, administrator, Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC (invited)

Who should attend: general managers and senior staff likely to implement sustainability in transit agencies, suppliers, consultants, and others supportive of public transportation's role in sustainability.
