Transportation Leaders Call For a Rewrite of the American Power Act

Transportation Leaders Say Senate Climate and Energy Proposal Severely Weakens Future of Federal Transportation Investment

WASHINGTON - The nation’s transportation leaders are holding a press conference call on Wednesday, May 19 at 10 a.m. EDT to urge sponsors of the American Power Act to reconsider how the proposed bill would direct revenues from transportation-based motor fuel fees. As currently drafted, the bill would impose new fees on fuels used in the surface transportation system but redirect funds to activities unrelated to improving the nation’s transportation infrastructure. This diversion would harm efforts to pass a new surface transportation bill and would also greatly impair the ability of states, counties, cities and transit systems to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and reduce transportation-related emissions.
