Statement by APTA President and CEO Michael Melaniphy On The Passing of Congressman Louis Stokes

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of retired Congressman Louis Stokes and the citizens of Cleveland as they mourn the death of Congressman Stokes, a leader dedicated to public service.  A native of Cleveland, he was a great supporter of the city and of its public transportation system.  Through his influence in Congress, he was able to make sure that much needed federal funds were available for many public transit projects, including the Tower City building and the bridges around the Tower City Rapid Transit rail station, which is Cleveland’s main downtown rail hub. In honor of his many years serving the people of Cleveland, the Louis Stokes/Windermere Rapid Station, located in the congressional district he served, was named for him.”
