Simonetta to Lead 'Metro' Light Rail System in Phoenix

This Week in Passenger Transport

December 22, 2003

Richard J. Simonetta, a former general manager and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority who served as APTA chair in 1994-1995, is joining Valley Metro Rail in Phoenix as its new chief executive officer. He will assume his new role after Jan. 1.

Simonetta has more than 30 years of experience in the public transportation industry, in both the public and private sectors. He comes to Valley Metro Rail from PB Consult, where he was a principal consultant, and earlier served as chief executive officer of Prima Facie Inc.

Construction on the light rail system is scheduled to begin by the summer of 2004.

Also, Valley Metro Rail announced that it has selected "Metro" as the name for the light rail system. The selection followed an exhaustive search that included 3,400 suggestions from the community and extensive opinion research.
