Governors: Add Infrastructure to Stimulus Plan

This Week in Passenger Transport

March 3, 2008

A coalition of state governors and local officials called on the federal government this past week to pass a second economic stimulus package that focuses on the nation’s transportation infrastructure.

The group, calling itself the Building America’s Future coalition, met Feb. 24 during the National Governors Association Winter Meeting in Washington. Leaders of the month-old, non-partisan coalition include California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell, and New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

The coalition pledged to work with state and local officials to get a commitment from presidential candidates to promise capital dollars to communities in need of infrastructure improvements, noting that investing in infrastructure also is a way to create jobs.
