More than 40,000 people participated in AMT – Montreal, Quebec’s, "In Town Without My Car!" special event, which included the grassing over of part of a downtown area closed to car traffic. The event was organized to educate the public about the overuse of single-occupant vehicles and to inform them of various alternative means of transportation. The winning event was a success with 43 percent of survey respondents saying they used public transportation on the day of the event.
