As a means to increase student awareness of transportation alternatives, Salem Area Transit in Salem, Oregon, hosted a Car Free Day in April. The day was a fare-free day for all riders. Riders were encouraged to deposit a special entry form that contained the name of a local school. The school with the most entries received a $2,000 prize. To help promote the event schools received posters, videos, and other information. The day was an outstanding success with the transit system setting a one-day ridership record.
