2006 Passenger Transport National Pump the Pump Articles

June 8 Is National Dump the Pump Day
May 22, 2006

Public transportation agencies around the country are encouraged to participate June 8 in National Dump the Pump Day, a national day to raise public awareness of transit as the quickest way to beat high gas prices.

On that day, transit agencies will be joining together on a national level to ask the public to park their cars ("dump the pump") and try transit, instead.

APTA is providing an online resource kit to assist transit agencies in carrying out their activities. The kit will provide suggested activities and messages; downloadable artwork of the campaign logo and artwork for buttons; and other materials for preparing proclamations and opinion pieces.

Transit Agencies Join National 'Dump the Pump' Initiative
June 19, 2006

Transit systems in more than 70 cities and counties across the nation participated June 8 in National Dump the Pump Day to highlight the importance of public transportation as the quickest and easiest way to beat high gas prices.

Transit agencies marked the day with a host of activities making the benefits and savings of public transportation tangible to their residents. Many of the initiatives were aimed at attracting first-time users who were unfamiliar with local public transit services.

Many agencies provided free rides to encourage residents to leave their vehicles at home and use public transit. Free trip vouchers were made available in local newspapers, on the agencies' web sites, and through various giveaways. A few activities are highlighted below.

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority/Tri-Rail in Pompano Beach, which offered free ride vouchers on its web site, reported a 19 percent increase in ridership. The Fort Worth Transportation Authority offered a free monthly premium June pass--valid on The T, Trinity Railway Express, and Dallas Area Rapid Transit light rail--to residents completing an online survey.

In dramatic fashion, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District parked an 8,800-gallon gasoline tanker truck outside the Fremont Station. According to BART, the 65-foot tanker represents just 4 percent of the 202,000 gallons of gas that BART riders save every day by taking transit instead of driving.

In Austin, Texas, the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority helped customers to relax and make their commute a "Happy Hour," by offering free bus service and holding a free concert at a park-and-ride. Capital Metro earlier won a Telly Award for its Dump the Pump advertising campaign held before Dump the Pump was adapted as the theme for the national initiative. In St. Louis, Metro sponsored a prize drawing aimed at commuters who had a friend or co-worker try transit for their work commute. The Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation hosted an informational transit fair at an outdoor concert that concert-goers could reach on IndyGo's free downtown circulator.

"National Dump the Pump Day highlighted that, by using public transit, people can beat high gas prices, help reduce traffic congestion, and assist our country in beating our oil addiction," said APTA President William W. Millar.

In addition to APTA, national sponsors were the Surface Transportation Policy Project; the Environmental and Energy Study Institute; and the Center for Transportation Excellence.

State sponsors included the Colorado Association of Transit Agencies; the Florida Public Transportation Association; the Georgia Transit Association; the Indiana Transportation Association; the Kentucky Public Transit Association; the Illinois Public Transit Association; the New York Public Transit Association; the Ohio Transit Association; the Pennsylvania Transportation Association; the South West Transit Association; and the Virginia Transit Association.
