SUBJECT: ANNUAL TRANSIT HALL OF FAME SCHOLARSHIP AWARD PROGRAM
The American Public Transportation Foundation (APTF) is pleased to bring to
your attention the Annual Transit Hall of Fame Scholarship Award Program.
The objective of the program is to increase and retain the number of young
professionals entering the transit field in order to sustain growth and improvement
throughout the industry. Since 1988, the Foundation has awarded more than
120 scholarships, successfully retaining more than 56% of awardees in various
positions throughout the public transportation industry. In 2004, 15 awards
totaling $52,000 were granted. The scholarships and other awards include:
- The Jack R. Gilstrap Scholarship awarded to the applicant receiving the
highest overall score as determined by the APTF Board of Directors
- The Parsons Brinckerhoff - Jim Lammie Scholarship awarded to an applicant
dedicated to a career in public transportation engineering
- The Louis T. Klauder Scholarship awarded to an applicant dedicated to
a career in the rail transit industry as an electrical or mechanical engineer
- The Dan M. Reichard, Jr. Scholarship awarded to an applicant dedicated
to a career in the business administration/management area of the transit
industry
- Two scholarships awarded to applicants planning careers in transit, either
with a transit agency or a business member
- The Donald C. Hyde Memorial Essay Award of $500 for the best response
to the required essay component of the program
The program combines two basic elements. First, subject to the availability
of funding, the APTF will award a minimum of six new scholarships of at least
$2,500 each for the following academic school year (fall semester) to individuals
in public transportation industry-related fields of study. Second, the participant
must be an active employee or participant in an internship program or supplemental
education program sponsored by an APTA member organization or an APTA member
assignee. Program details and the nomination form are enclosed.
Please note that candidates must be nominated by a member organization of
the American Public Transportation Association, and all nominations/applications
must be postmarked by 5 p.m. on June 17, 2005. The APTF Board of Directors
will select the recipients in July and nominees will be appropriately notified
of awards. The scholarship awards will be presented at the APTA Annual Meeting
& EXPO, September 25-28, 2005, in Dallas, Texas.
