Rijnwoude, Netherlands--The Netherlands Ministry of Transport is currently assembling the components of Demo '98, which will showcase Automated Vehicle Guidance systems, at a special demonstration site--a road under construction. The demonstration site in the town of Rijnwoude will include a six-kilometer, two-lane road closed to traffic, a slow speed demonstration site, and an off-road demonstration site.
About two dozen European demonstration projects will be present, along with the PATH program of the University of California at Berkeley.
The European Telematics Application Program, as Intelligent Transportation Systems are known in Europe, will convene workshops covering the solution of mobility problems using AVG; short and medium applications of AVG; AVG research; and international cooperation in AVG.
Four European Union ITS projects will be demonstrated: truck platooning (CHAUFFEUR); obstacle detection and automatic braking (AC-ASSIST); driver attention monitoring and automatic steering (SAVE); and a "green wave"-based data exchange between traffic lights and vehicles.
An automatic docking system for buses, designed in the Netherlands, will be unveiled at the AVG workshop. The system uses inductive current through cables embedded in the road and provides precision steering to minimize the horizontal distance between the bus floor and the platform. Also, automated people movers from Rotterdam and Amsterdam will be shown on the demonstration track.
Dates of the demos and workshops are still being finalized. For information, send an e-mail to the organizers at <dst_bur@euronet.nl>, or visit the European AVG web site
