Copenhagen Turns to LNG

Copenhagen, Denmark--The Copenhagen Public Transit Authority (HT) will be operating nearly one fifth of its urban bus fleet with liquefied natural gas by the middle of the year, in line with its policy to help reduce pollution in the metropolitan area.

The HT urban bus fleet, which covers Copenhagen and its suburbs, includes about 1,000 buses. The 128 Swedish Scania-DAB buses ordered last year, at a cost equivalent to about $30 million, will bring the natural gas bus fleet in the capital city of Denmark up to about 180 vehicles, or 18 percent of the total urban fleet in revenue service. This represents one of the largest urban LNG fleets in Europe.

HT contracts out operation of the bus fleet in Copenhagen to private operators. The alternative fuel vehicles will be run by Bus Danmark and Combus, two of the principal private operators.
