HANOVER, GERMANY-The Hanover Public Transit Authority in Germany is testing a prototype passenger information touch screen display unit that also sells transit tickets.
The unit takes the "tix" ticket issuing machine a step further by adding electronic timetable information, fare details, local maps, and tourist information to existing "tix" features. They can be used by passengers with combined phone and/or cash cards to purchase tickets. Tix units are already in operation at 10 rail stations and intermodal terminals in Hanover.
Provided the field trials prove successful, a total of 120 of the touch screen display units will be installed at bus stops and commuter rail stations in the Hanover region over the next two years. The pilot unit was developed by the transit operator in partnership with a local public-private consortium.
The color display touch screen will offer information in a question and answer format with two language options, English and French, in addition to German. An option for passengers to use their cash cards to purchase tickets to local cultural attractions is being tested and might be incorporated into the production series.
