Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia--A private consortium will design, build, operate, and maintain,
on a 30-year concession, Kuala Lumpur's new Express Rail Link with the new international
airport, which is expected to handle 16 million passengers annually. The concession is
renewable for an additional 30 years.
Work on the $755 million project is underway, and the ERL is scheduled to open Dec. 1,
1999.
The 35-mile line will do double duty: as an express airport link that will carry 156
passengers with plenty of luggage space from the downtown KL main rail station to the
airport in 30 minutes, and as a commuter train that will stop at three intermediate
locations and take 36 minutes for the entire trip. As a commuter train, the express will
carry 540 passengers. However, it is the airport run that is expected to generate about 80
percent of the anticipated revenue.
Another amenity for airline passengers offered by ERL will be the opportunity to check
in baggage at the city air terminal to be located at the Central Station. Passengers
flying into KL will also be able to check their luggage through to CAT, in effect
extending the airport to the city center.
