Latin American Association in Agreement with APTA

Public Transportation Magazine

May 13, 2002

APTA signed a collaborative agreement with ALAMYS, the Latin American Association of Metros and Subways, April 17 during the Second International Conference on Urban Public Transportation Systems, organized by the American Society of Civil Engineers and co-sponsored by APTA. ALAMYS has 25 members, and is administered from the offices of the Madrid Metro in Spain.

The agreement with ALAMYS joins APTA's other agreements with national and international transit industry associations that share the common goals of transit advocacy.

The ASCE conference, devoted to the theme of ensuring sustainability through public transportation, brought together decision makers and transit planners from around the world to discuss their challenges and successes in promoting urban livability, smart growth, and environmental concerns. Federal Transit Administrator Jennifer L Dorn shared U.S. success stories with delegates on the first day of the three-day conference, and representatives of some of the world's major operating systems presented papers on their own methods of addressing sustainability issues, which will be published by ASCE.

The proceedings concluded with a separate workshop highlighting activities undertaken in the first three years of the Federal Transit Administration's own International Mass Transit Program in promoting international networking and business opportunities.
