SINGAPORE-Mitsui and NEC group companies have won an order from the Land Transport Authority of Singapore to install one of the world's first internal monitoring systems for subway trains, according to a company spokesman.
The system, worth 4.2 billion yen ($35 million), will enable video monitoring of automated, unmanned trains on a prospective 12.5-mile route linking the city center with Punggol, a new residential area. The line is expected to be completed in 2002.
The trading giant's partners in the deal are NEC Corp. and NEC System Integration Ltd. Mitsui hopes to gain more orders for the system in Singapore, as well as China and Taiwan. It won a contract for a subway communications system in Beijing jointly with NEC System Integration and will start construction in February.
Mitsui, the largest among Japan's major trading houses, annually sources the equivalent of $400 million to $600 million in orders from railway-related projects.
