Europe Instituting Real-Time Information

European cities are increasingly implementing the use of real-time passenger information systems, most of them based on urban applications of Global Positioning Satellite technology.  Some innovative recent applications have been reported from France, where pagers and the Internet are being used to convey next bus departure information to waiting passengers.

In the Infobus project now undergoing testing in the French cityof Metz, a pager available from the JC Decaux company provides the estimated real-time arrival of the next five buses programmed to the user's closest bus stop.

In Mulhouse, France, an Internet web page mainteained by TRAM (the appropriate acronym for the Mulhouse transit authority) advises users of scheduled bus arrivals at 26 schools and public institutions.

Lille and Lyon, also in France, have followed suit, using the Bustop software developed by Aquitaine.
