New SkyTrain Line for Vancouver, BC

Vancouver, B.C.--BC Transit has announced that a new 14-station SkyTrain line is scheduled to become operational by the fall of 2000. The 13-mile-long line, which will be served by up to 80 MKII Bombardier SkyTrain vehicles, will link Vancouver's Broadway Station with suburban New Westminster.

The $450 million (Cdn.) contract between the province of British Columbia and Bombardier calls for the provision, operation, and maintenance of the advanced transit system. As part of the agreement, the company will establish a Center for Advanced Transit Systems in Vancouver to promote the SkyTrain globally as an urban transit solution.

The SkyTrain entered service in Vancouver in 1986 and currently operates 150 vehicles in service. Bombardier Transportation, based in Montreal, had revenues of $8.5 billion (Cdn.) last year and employs 47,000 people in its manufacturing facilities in 11 countries, including the U.S.
