Sydney Vending Machines Speak 14
Languages
When the world came to Sydney, Australia, for the 2000 Summer Olympics, Cubic
Transportation Systems was there to help with futuristic "touch-screen"
ticketing machines to provide simpler and faster rail transportation.
CityRail of Australia formalized an agreement with the company for a system-wide
rollout of smart card application technology in the new touch-screen ticket vending
machines, following an extensive trial in Sydney. Cubic previously provided system-wide,
contactless card-based fare collection systems in Washington and Chicago.
Because of the Olympics, the new touch-screen machines installed by Cubic Australia
offer easy instructions in 14 languages, including English, French, Italian, Spanish,
Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic, Malay, and traditional and simplified Chinese. In some
cases, only two light touches on the user-friendly screen are required to get the right
ticket.
"With Sydney and its rail system coming under international attention, we worked
with CityRail to deliver our touch screens ahead of time to improve the transport
experience for the millions of Australians and international visitors expected to use the
railways over the Olympic period," said Cubic Australia Managing Director Tom Walker.
The machines also allow commuters to buy many tickets at once and offer access to the
Airport Link rail service.
