The International Union of Public Transport is holding a conference Nov. 14 and 15 in
Duesseldorf, Germany, on public transportation systems that provide links to outlying
shopping and leisure centers.
Representatives of eight European countries will present examples of good practices on
how to serve this increasingly popular market, which up to now has been almost exclusively
the domain of the private car. Six conference sessions will feature the presentation of
case studies from regional centers in Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, along
with the experiences of Lisbon, Madrid, Paris, Prague, and Vienna.
The conference also will explore environmental issues involving the siting of large,
new commercial infrastructures that add to traffic congestion in urban regions. UITP
Secretary General Hans Rat will chair sessions about informing public transport users
about traffic disturbances, and about the reduction of private traffic to and from out of
town shopping centers.
To register for the conference, contact UITPs Maristella Angotzi at telephone 011
322 663 6656 or by e-mail at events@uitp.com.
