Spring 2002 International Transit Study Mission to Australia and New Zealand

TO: All APTA Members

FROM: William W. Millar
              President

DATE: January 17, 2002

SUBJECT: Spring 2002 Study Mission To Australia And New Zealand

I am pleased to invite you to join a select group of APTA members who will take part in our Spring 2002 international study mission to Australia and New Zealand, May 17 to June 2. The mission departs Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand, May 17 and returns to Los Angeles from Brisbane, Australia, June 2. The cities and transit systems to be visited include Auckland, Wellington and Christ Church in New Zealand and Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane in Australia. The lifestyles and urban densities of the two countries have much in common with our own. We will have lots to share, see and talk about—and yes, in English. APTA Chair Peter M. Cipolla will lead the mission. George Wynne, APTA International Programs Director, will be along as trip coordinator.

This will be our first mission for industry leaders to the Asia/Pacific region, following our successful 2000 and 2001 missions to Europe and Latin America. Our hosts in the two countries will be the International Association of Public Transport (Australia/New Zealand) and the Bus and Coach Association in New Zealand. They are helping us to prepare an outstanding professional program that will explore bus, light rail, alternative fuels and public policy issues of common interest. Some of the visits and scheduled activities include: the ‘Olympics Legacy’ in Sydney, air/rail links, station development, marketing innovations, bus rapid transit corridors, alternative fuels, a guided busway and a monorail, and the globalization and privatization of bus fleets. An optional weekend activity includes observing Australia’s National Bus Roadeo and sampling the premium wines of the Hunter Valley. Besides representing a unique cultural and learning experience, the mission will promote information sharing, networking and business opportunities for participating industry members. We hope for a balanced mix of systems and business members.

Participants will receive program booklets with system and city profiles prior to our departure. A special half-day seminar to be organized in Brisbane by Peter Moore, Executive Director of the International Association of Public Transport, will provide the delegation an opportunity to exchange experience with regional transit leaders.

Despite the distances involved, we have been able to hold the cost to APTA members to not more than $ 4,000, including round-trip from Los Angeles, all inter-city travel in both countries and first class hotels with breakfast. A number of sponsored meals are also being planned. The APTA travel agency can arrange gateway fares from/to your home destinations on request.

The size of the group will be limited to a maximum of 15 participants for logistical reasons and we expect the trip to be oversubscribed. To ensure your space, we ask that you complete the reservation form below and return it to APTA no later than March 27 with a deposit of $500. The balance (exact amount will follow) is due April 17. The reservation is refundable if the trip is cancelled for any reason or over subscribed.

For any questions you might have, please contact George G. Wynne, 202-496-4833, gwynne@apta.com. We look forward to hearing from you.
