Current Issues

  • ISAC/HSIN Information Dissemination

  • Standards Development & Implementation

  • Influenza/Pandemics – H1N1 (formerly Swine flu)
We will continue to monitor the situation and work with appropriate authorities.  APTA is not currently emphasizing advanced precautionary measures to prevent the spread of this virus.  We will publish additional information and guidance as needed. For key facts on swine influenza see the CDC Website.

Programs

The Emergency Response Preparedness Program (ERPP)is an online "mutual aid" tool designed to assist in times of these unfortunate disasters and other situations. This site provides a venue by which fellow transit systems and industry entities can volunteer and /or access resources in order to prepare for an expected event or in the wake of an unforeseen situation.

Prepare now and test out your emergency evacuation and preparation plans to ensure they adequately address seasonal and situational events.  As we head into winter, many mid western and northern agencies may experience an extreme weather outlook this season.  Having adequate supplies and emergency backup systems in place and tested before a disaster strikes is necessary in avoiding extensive service disruptions.  Remember: $1 in preparation saves an estimated $7 in recovery associated costs.

Current Threats & Conditions

Fewer named storms expected in 2009 hurricane season, according to forecasters from AccuWeather.com Hurricane Centre.  They noted that in 2008, there were 16 named storms and eight hurricanes, five of which were major ones -- that is, they were classified as Category 3 or higher hurricanes on the Saffir-Simpson scale of storm intensity.  The center predicted there will be 13 named storms, eight of which will become hurricanes.

The PT-ISAC has created the Security Technology Center (STC) for its members to provide them with an easily navigable database of security technology product descriptions, reviews, tutorials, and planning guidance applicable to the Public Transportation Industry.

Standards have become an important program activity at APTA and in the public transportation industry. APTA, through its policy and planning committees, has played a major role in creating active working structures within the organization focused on the development of standards. For more information in participating in the standards program visit our Standards Program.
