Thursday Update on Irma and Harvey

September 7, 2017

Good Afternoon APTA Member,

I met today with South West Transit Association Executive Director Kristen Joyner and heard stories of how your donations are already on their way to transit workers along the Texas Gulf Coast. APTA employees are joining the industry's effort by donating $8,000 in bank gift cards, which SWTA and the Texas Transit Association will distribute to affected members of the transit family.

If you or your organization need help coordinating donations to Hurricane Harvey survivors, please contact SWTA's Kristen Joyner at (817) 295-3663 or kjoyner@swta.org.

Transit Systems Preparing for Hurricane Irma:
APTA's Director of Security, Risk and Emergency Management, Polly Hanson, has surveyed public transportation operations in Florida and has assembled a summary of the latest information on planned shutdowns as Hurricane Irma moves towards the United States. Many systems indicate they will end operations upon the arrival of tropical force winds, or continuous 39 mph winds.

Your Involvement in the Disaster Relief Process:
Transit agencies follow the FEMA process in assessing their needs and in seeking assistance. Polly Hanson will remain in contact with the affected transit properties across the Southeastern United States. She can be reached at phanson@apta.com. You can learn more about FTA's involvement in relief efforts here and about the FEMA process here

APTA will continue to monitor the situations in Texas and Florida and provide updates on the status of public transportation.

Sincerely,

Richard A. White
APTA Acting President & CEO
