President Obama Signs Five-Year Surface Transportation Authorization Bill into Law

On Friday, President Obama signed the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act into law at a signing ceremony at the White House. This legislation was the reconciliation bill formed by the conference committee charged with negotiating the differences between the House-passed Surface Transportation Reauthorization and Reform (STRR) Act and the Senate-passed Developing a Reliable and Innovative Vision for the Economy (DRIVE) Act. The committee report was filed in the House on Tuesday, and passed by a vote of 359 – 65 on Thursday. Later that day, the bill was brought to the Senate, where it passed that night by a vote of 83 – 16. This bill is the first long-term surface transportation authorization in ten years, since the passage of SAFETEA-LU in 2005. Action Alert

  • APTA Members are asked to urge their Members of Congress to support a permanent extension of the transit commuter benefit in the upcoming tax extenders package. This is likely to be dealt with before the end of the year, so urgency for this extension is pressing.
  • APTA also supports the alternative fuels tax benefit and requests that this also be included in the eventual package of tax extenders.
