The 2012 APTA Legislative Conference convenes at a critical time in our nation’s transportation history. The expiration of SAFETEA-LU has resulted in multiple short-term extensions to the program, causing uncertainty across the industry. Significant action to produce a new multiyear, multimodal, surface transportation authorization bill is finally underway in both the House and Senate, adding to optimism that Congress may be able to complete a bill this year. However, disputes over highway and transit funding, and various policy proposals in both bills require constant vigilance and the engagement of all industry stakeholders. As we enter a new era in federal transportation policy, your understanding of all of these issues and your ability to make the industry’s case on these issues to your elected officials is more important than ever.
APTA’s 37th Annual Legislative Conference is the public transportation industry’s best chance to make sure that transit’s message gets heard in Washington. Conference participants have the opportunity to attend sessions on important legislative issues that Congress will consider in the year ahead, as well as interact with elected officials and Congressional staff on those issues, network with industry peers, and enjoy opportunities to socialize with policy makers and friends. Your involvement and visits on Capitol Hill are essential because they allow you to explain how your services or your business benefits your community and the constituents whom your elected officials represent. Let’s all work together to ensure that public transportation’s voice in Washington is loud and clear.
