In attracting new talent, knowledge, and skills to public transportation, connecting with the K-12 students in your community is a way to tell our story of opportunities. We want to hear your outreachstory! How will you engage the youth in your area?
Share your best practices, outreach activities, and stories on APTA’s website or as a feature in Passenger Transport. Publicizing how our memberspromote our industry to the future workforce by connecting with students intheir communities is an essential aspect of workforce development.
Please assist us with this fantastic opportunityto introduce transit careers to the next generation of prospective workers, andto mentor and guide the nation’s youth to the public transportation industry. 2017 APTA National Public Transportation Career Day Highlights!
Delaware Transit Corporation (DART First State), Wilmington, DE:
The Delaware Transit Corporation participated in National Career Day by hosting its 17th Annual Transit Poster Contest, “DART & Technology, Traveling into the Future.” Open to school-age children Grades 6 through 12, the contest is designed to encourage students to learn more about public transportation and its benefits, as well as the chance to see their artwork featured by DART in various advertisements, promotions, or displays. With continuous improvement and growth of transit services statewide, DART used this opportunity to inform and promote the advantages of using public transit, reaching over 85 students within their community.
Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Capital Metro), Austin, TX:
Capital Metro went above and beyond for the 2017 National Career Day, hosting a number of events targeting students of all grade ranges. They participated in a Middle School career fair, taook a group of Elementary School students for a ride on one of their trains, and sponsored teenagers for a youth film contest!
Their community outreach efforts allowed them to connect to over 500 students!
Chatham Area Transit Authority (CAT), Savannah, GA:
CAT reached out to students in underserved areas and arranged a field trip to their facility where they showed the complexities of how a transit system is run, as well as the many jobs that are available within the tranist industry. The students toured the facility, and then received a presentation by a member of each Department about the many employment opportunities available. Emphasis was placed on the integrity, commitment and scholarship of potential employees. They also shared the importance of team building within the organization, and left them with the concept of service to their community through public transit.
RTA celebrated National Career Day by interviewing and sharing the career paths of key company employees. Follow the link below and hear their story!
METRO, Cincinnati, OH:
Metro was on the go! They participated in this event by looking to hire a diverse group of talented, passionate individuals to fill bus operator positions and other roles in maintenance, operations, planning, human resources and customer service. Students stopped at Government Square, in Cincinnati from 9AM – 3PM to talk with a Human Resource Representative about the many open positions available, and how they could take their career on the road!
Representatives from VIA MetropolitanTransit in San Antonio visited Southwest HighSchool to inform seniors and juniors about careers in public transportation,and also discuss how their current training in Auto Tech could lead to a greatcareer in the transit industry. Students and educators were provided a tour of the VIA Fleet &Facilities Maintenance Shop.
During the visit,students received a comprehensive overview of how VIA hires and trainsemployees to service and repair a large fleet of transit buses, paratransitvans and other vehicles. The studentswere particularly impressed with the various shops, especially the Heavy Unitand Paint/Body.
Students were alsobriefed about VIA’s Targeted Maintenance Training Program (TMTP), whichprovides employees an opportunity to train and become a skilled diesel mechanicthrough classroom instruction and on-the-job training over a two-year period.
VIA expects tocontinue recruitment and outreach efforts to high schools in the Greater SanAntonio Region and to participate in future National Public Transportation Career Dayactivities.
The Memphhis Area transit Authority (MATA), Memphis, Tennessee:
The Memphis AreaTransit Authority (MATA), Shelby County Schools (SCS), Greater Memphis Chamber(GMC) hosted 100Shelby County School students at the Central Station. The field tripshowcased a variety of career opportunities in public transportation tostudents from these four Career Technical Centers (CTC): Trezevant, Kingsbury, Sheffield, and Cordova.
In addition tohighlighting jobs such as critical operators and mechanics, additional career opportunities were presented, including professions in administration, accounting, legal,IT, and public transportation agencies.The following organizations also participated: MATA, Premier TransportationServices, Amtrak, Megabus and Greyhound.
