Recent advancements in battery and electric drive technologies, lower vehicle cost, and government incentives, light duty electric vehicles are gaining acceptance and market share. Some of these factors have the potential to increase acceptance of heavy-duty electric vehicles (HDEV) as well. In this webinar battery experts from the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory will provide information on battery technologies with potential use in HDEVs, particularly city transit buses. We will discuss tradeoffs between different characteristics of batteries including power, energy, life, cost, charge acceptance, etc. We will also provide an overview of general battery requirements for HDEVs and discuss vehicle integration and operational considerations. Additionally we will touch on the current state of battery testing and modeling as well as some ongoing DOE and NREL battery research programs and capabilities. We expect this webinar to provide valuable information for those wishing to be more informed about batteries in the growing heavy duty EV market.

Ahmad Pesaran is the energy storage group manager in the NREL Transportation Systems center. His group studies high energy batteries, battery thermal testing and analysis, electrochemical-thermal-mechanical modeling, and lithium ion safety. He also lead activities on post-vehicle battery second use, techno-economic analysis of batteries for electric vehicles, and vehicle and grid energy storage requirement analysis and simulations.  He has co-authored more than 150 publications on energy storage and electric drive vehicles. Ahmad received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from UCLA.

Kandler Smith Ph.D.

Kandler Smith is a Senior Researcher for the past 8 years in Energy Storage at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.  He leads projects in battery life predictive modeling, multi-physics modeling and systems control. Kandler holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University and recently co-authored a text book on design and analysis of large Li-ion battery systems.
