Veteran and Military Family Resource Center

APTA understands the importance of access to public transportation options for veterans and military families. Public transportation has the potential to enhance the quality of life for all Americans, and perhaps none more so than our veterans returning from overseas duties. Transportation can help to connect them with work, education, health care, and other important services.

In June of 2012, APTA initiated the Military/Transit Cooperative Task Force. This group is committed to bridging connections between transit systems and military communities via veteran job fairs, industry wide hiring goals, and facilitation of resource and information sharing. Our members make a great effort to honor the veteran and military community, and this resource center highlights their work and serves as an information clearinghouse for systems and individuals interested in this initiative.

Public transportation has the potential to enhance the quality of life for all Americans, and perhaps none more so than our veterans returning from overseas duties, those already separated and military spouses. Transportation can help to connect with work, education, health care, and other important services. This job fair highlights career paths for U.S. Military Veterans in public transportation – both private and public sector positions – including management, operations, maintenance, engineering, manufacturing, and technology. APTA business members, regional public transportation systems, and other organizations will have representatives at the job fair to help chart pathways to new jobs and professions.

This will the American Public Transportation Association’s third Hiring Fair. The job fair grew from APTA’s Military/Transportation Cooperative Initiative Task Force.

If you have any questions about the workshop or the fair, please contact Karen W. Harvey, APTA’s Director-Human Resources at 202-496-4801 or

Mountain Line Transit Prioritizes Veteran Needs Through T-OPS Program

Mountain Line Transit Authority (MLTA) in Morgantown, West Virginia honors the veteran community in many ways, but primarily through their many hiring initiatives and their T-OPS (Transportation Options) program. In April of 2010 Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited Morgantown to challenge MLTA General Manager David Bruffy and other community leaders to provide a support mechanism for returning veterans and their families. This visit was the impetus for, a non- profit organization for which MLTA was a founding partner. VetConnection is a one-stop portal that serves United States military veterans and their families by providing resources and information for jobs, healthcare, job training, education, housing assistance, financial guidance, legal advice and more.
