National Transit Database

The National Transit Database (NTD) is the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA's) primary national database for statistics on the transit industry.  Recipients of Federal transportation funds are required to report a wide range of agency data on an annual basis.  Given the level of data reported, these are typically published more than a year after the reporting period.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), as part of the United States Department of Transportation, compiles, analyzes, and makes accessible information on the nation's transportation systems; collects information on intermodal transportation and other areas as needed; and improves the quality and effectiveness of DOT's statistical programs through research, development of guidelines, and promotion of improvements in data acquisition and use.

American Community Survey

The American Community Survey (ACS) is the US Census Bureau annual survey of demographic, social, and economic  data, including journey-to-work statistics.  The ACS is described on its home page and data from the 2009 and earlier ACS surveys can be accessed at American FactFinder.  The ACS reports commuter data for a variety of geographies and differentiated by selected demographic characteristics.
