Washington, D.C. (November 6, 2024) – American Public Transportation Association (APTA) President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas released the following statement:

“The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and its 1,600 member organizations congratulate President-elect Donald J. Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and look forward to working with their Administration to strengthen public transportation across America.

“Public transportation is a critical driver of our nation’s economy, supporting millions of jobs and generating significant economic activity in communities of all sizes. As a $79 billion industry, public transit directly employs more than 430,000 Americans and supports millions of additional private-sector jobs. Every $1 billion invested in public transportation creates and sustains 50,000 jobs and generates approximately $5 billion in economic activity.

“The industry’s impact extends far beyond major metropolitan areas. Manufacturing facilities in states like Indiana, Kentucky, and Alabama produce essential components for the nation’s public transit systems, creating stable employment and boosting local economies. Under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), states and local agencies have initiated more than 11,200 transit projects across the nation to modernize and expand operations.

“The $42 billion in transit funding that flows into the private sector each year supports diverse industries – from manufacturing, engineering and construction to technology and service delivery – demonstrating public transportation’s vital role in sustaining America’s economic future.

“APTA and its members stand ready to work with President-elect Trump and his team to advance transportation infrastructure investment that will create American jobs, strengthen our communities, and grow our economy. We look forward to sharing our expertise and collaborating with the new Administration to build a 21st Century public transportation system that serves all Americans.”
