APTA Sustainability Commitment

APTA SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENT

The APTA Sustainability Commitment recognizes members who are taking action to advance sustainability in their operations and practices. It provides transit agencies and business members with a common framework to define, initiate, and advance sustainability in public transportation.

Applications Are Now Open

Applications for higher-level recognition are now open.  Application deadline: January 15, 2027

All current signatories are asked to submit an annual update on their progress by January 15, 2027. Signatories may do so by:

  • Updating the Excel template provided by APTA in the Advance to a Higher Level section below; or
  • Submitting their Annual Sustainability Report.

Not yet a signatory? All APTA members are welcome to sign the entry-level Sustainability Commitment at any time.

How to Participate

Become a Signatory – Entry Level

There are no prerequisites for signing the APTA Sustainability Commitment letter. APTA members can become signatories at any time and have the flexibility to advance the core principles at a pace that aligns with their organization’s priorities, resources, and capacity.

To become a signatory, complete and submit the Commitment Letter for your organization type:


Advance to a Higher Level

Signatories can earn additional recognition by demonstrating progress across key sustainability indicators. Recognition levels begin at Bronze and advance through Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Higher-level recognition requires organizations to demonstrate an increasing range of short- and long-term sustainability achievements and targeted improvements. Signatories can apply for a higher level of recognition or report on their progress and continued adherence to the Commitment using the appropriate template:

Join the APTA Sustainability Commitment Signatories Subcommittee to connect with other signatory organizations, share best practices, and discuss sustainability challenges and opportunities.
