This brief highlights key findings from a study conducted
by Wirthlin Worldwide February 20-23, 2004. The study interviewed 1,000 adults
18 years of age and older living in the Continental United States. Interviews
were stratified and weighted by gender, region, ethnicity, and education to
reflect population characteristics. The findings are projectable to the nationwide
popula-tion within + 3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. Any
questions about this study should be directed to Mary Trupo at APTA (202-496-4869)
or Dee Allsop/Anne Rzeszut at Wirthlin Worldwide (703-480-1900).
Key findings follow:
Most Americans (80%) see quality of life benefits from increased investment
in public transportation.
Almost every American (92%) wants transportation legislation passed immediately.
Americans support public funding for the expansion and improvement of
public trans-portation at a rate of 76% versus 22% that oppose.
Two-thirds of the country support pro-public transportation Congressional
candidates.
A majority of Americans believe transportation investment is preferable
over tax cuts to stimulate the economy.
These findings hold true across all geographies - urban, suburban, small
town and rural residents.

Americans want transportation legislation passed immediately
If you knew that Congress has a chance right now to pass
a bill that would ease traffic congestion, create millions of new jobs, repair
roads and bridges, increase transit routes, and generate a 6-to-1 economic
return for your state, what level of importance would you place on this legislation

According to Dee Allsop, Chairman and CEO of WirthlinWorldwide,
"Based on previous public transportation polls, the state of the economy
and the myriad of political issues given attention during an election year,
these results are stronger than I would have anticipated. It is clear Ameri-cans
are concerned about the economy and support increased funding in public transportation."
