'Aroma Therapy' for Paris Metro Stations

Paris, France—Designer perfumes specially mixed by Quest International—a firm that supplies fragrances to such high fashion firms as Hermes and Rochas—are being mixed with the cleaning fluids for the Paris underground metro system.

According to press reports from Paris, the regional transit authority uses some 18 tons of the "clean-smelling" special mix per year, at a cost equivalent to about $300,000.

About five million passengers a day who pass through the underground Metro and RER stations controlled by RATP, the regional transit authority, get a whiff of clean scent in their nostrils. The special formula mix combines the fragrance of lemon, orange, and lavender.

Nearly seven million square feet of Metro and suburban RER station surfaces are getting the treatment nightly.
