The Rail Safety, Security; Emergency Management; & Safe, Effective, and Clean Transit Excellence Awards recognize APTA transportation systems that have implemented programs or projects that have achieved documented success in addressing specific safety or security program areas.
The deadline for all Rail safety; security; emergency management; and safe, effective, and clean transit excellence award applications is COB Monday, April 27, 2026 .
Award Categories
Safety, Security & Emergency Excellence Awards are presented in three categories which are derived from the National Transit Database. For a more detailed description, see the Public Transportation Fact Book.
- Commuter/Intercity/Regional/High Speed Rail
- Heavy Rail
- Light Rail/Streetcar
- Contracted Service Provider

- Successful nominations will be judged on their benefit level, innovation, transferability, and effectiveness:
- Note: Nominees selected to receive the Gold Award will be asked to produce and submit a 1-2 minute video that briefly describes the program/project and the benefits derived. You can view examples by going to Award Recipient Videos.
