We will visit Ka Papa Loʻi o Kānewai in beautiful Mānoa Valley, a native Hawaiian taro farming community co-located with the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Participants will tour the Kānewai site, seeing the stream, irrigation systems, and the taro patches, then work in the patches to participate in maintenance, planting, and harvesting activities. Whether you’re new to the meeting, APTA, or the industry, this session will enable you to get the most from this conference and from APTA. You’ll get an overview of the business committee structure, information on how to get involved in its activities and advocacy, and provide tips for how to make the most of your APTA experience.

3:00 PM – 5:30 PM Honolulu’s New Rail System Technical Tour

The tour will showcase Honolulu’s new 20-mile rail system, which is a Grade of Automation (GoA) 4 Unattended Train Operation. The West Project Segment extends about ten miles from Kualaka’i Station at East Kapolei to Hālawa Station at Aloha Stadium (a total of nine stations). Trial operations are now underway and interim revenue service is scheduled to commence during the first half of 2023. It is a short-term opportunity to improve mobility within West and Central O‘ahu while the system is extended to serve the Airport in 2025 and the Downtown area in 2030. The $11 billion exclusive fixed guideway system includes several firsts for U.S. transit systems including Unattended Train Operations, Automatic Passenger Screen Gates, and an advanced Security System. The four-car train sets have a comfort load of 642 passengers with open gangways that allow for walk-thru access between cars. The tour includes a visit to the Rail Operations Center including the Operations Control Center, the Maintenance Facility and a walk thru tour of a train set. Participant transportation will be provided by TheBus and will parallel the east side alignment.

Open to all, the annual meeting will help define the priorities for the BMBG and its business members for 2023. Discussions will include ongoing work with the transit CEOs to develop a price adjustment mechanism for future contracts to address extraordinary inflation in raw materials, the work plans for the BMBG’s seven committees, updates on APTA’s upcoming EXPO 2023 and other meetings, upcoming ballot initiative and Washington advocacy plans, and various changes to the BMBG bylaws.
