This is a powerful opportunity for agencies and private and public sector organizations to partner in recruiting new talent and engaging current employees. You can highlight the exciting career paths available in public transportation for engineers, planners, marketing professionals, social media experts, operators, managers, executives, and beyond…
APTA will provide free resources to transit agencies, government partners, schools, and private-sector companies. If you’re ready to ignite transit career interest in your region, sign up today.
Organizations that sign up to participate will host National Transit Career Day onsite in your own town at a facility/school/depot/station/etc. Your transit career day event can focus on an initiative that your organization is currently working on or you can tap into an idea that the APTA team shares via the resource toolkit.
The simultaneous events around the country on one day is a collective effort for organizations to participate in marketing, media coverage, individual/company social media, career fairs, school tours, school visits, and more to ignite transportation career(s) excitement.
This initiative is designed to feature technology, procurement, safety, engineering, finance, operations, maintenance, and more. The goal is to energize the public transportation industry and capture the attention of current and future professionals.
If your organization has a recruitment or retention initiative that you are currently working on, you can simply schedule your event on November 13th, sign-up to participate, and market your event as “National Transit Career Day”
If your organization is currently hiring, and has multiple jobs to fill, we recommend a public facing event like a career fair. You would publicize your career fair as National Transit Career Day and invite professionals in various job categories to bring their CV and learn about careers.
APTA will provide resources like “how to” 1-page checklists and “day in the life of” career videos to help.
If your organization is not hiring, you could host a student tour of a facility or send a bus/operator/manager/maintainer to school to introduce students to the technology and equipment. You could also engage your organization’s employees by planning tours on November 13, 2025. So often your staff members are the experts in their own area yet have very little exposure to locations, tasks, and staff in other locations or careers. Ultimately, you can consider assigning time/budget to organize the best National Transit Career Day event to meet the needs of your organization.
This is a Workforce Development Committee strategy (Chair – LaShanda Dawkins), being led by the HR Working Group (Leads – Rosa Medina-Cristobal, Mersida Ibric, Kelley Schneider).
