APTA serves as the Standards Development Organization (SDO) for public transportation in North America. It manages various planning committees and working groups that maintain and develop a library of nearly 350 consensus-based standards, recommended practices, and white papers used across the transit industry for specifications, policies and guidance. These documents span all modes of public transportation and include the topics of; bus and rail transit, commuter rail, vehicle design and maintenance, procurement, security, safety, technology, and sustainability. The APTA Standards program partners with the U.S. Federal agencies in the development of industry standards and is funded in part by grants from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
